What Is Human Flourishing?

A plain-language explanation of an old idea that matters again now that software shapes so much of daily life.

Human flourishing describes a life that is going well as a whole — not a mood, and not a score. It is usually discussed across several dimensions: physical and mental health, close relationships, meaning and purpose, character, agency over one's own choices, and enough material stability to make those choices real. Guardian Enterprise uses flourishing as a design direction: technology should add to those dimensions rather than quietly subtract from them.

The dimensions

What people usually mean by flourishing

Health

Physical and mental capacity to live the life you are actually trying to live.

Relationships

People you are known by. Most of what makes a hard year survivable sits here.

Meaning

A sense that what you spend your days on matters to someone, including you.

Agency

The ability to make consequential decisions about your own life, and to be able to change them.

Why now

Technology is no longer neutral about any of this

  • Attention is the raw material of most modern business models, and attention is finite.
  • Coordination load inside families has grown even as tools multiplied.
  • Automated systems increasingly make or shape decisions people used to make themselves.
  • Time returned to a person is not a soft benefit — it is the precondition for everything else.

What it asks of a product

Four honest tests

Does it return time?

Or does it need your attention to be valuable to its owner?

Does it keep decisions with you?

Assistance is welcome. Substitution for judgement is not.

Is it truthful about limits?

A tool that hides uncertainty makes worse decisions look confident.

Can you leave?

Export and deletion are flourishing features, not compliance chores.

What we do not claim

Being careful about evidence

  • Flourishing research is a broad external field; where we reference it, it belongs to its original authors.
  • Guardian Enterprise is not a university, government body or independent research institute.
  • We do not claim measured outcomes for our products; we describe how they are designed.

Questions

Common questions

Is human flourishing the same as happiness?
No. Happiness is a passing state. Flourishing describes a life going well across several dimensions at once — health, relationships, meaning, character, agency and material security — including through periods that do not feel pleasant.
Who decides what flourishing means for a person?
The person does. Any framework that hands that judgement to an institution, an employer or a piece of software has already taken something important away.
What does flourishing have to do with software?
Software now shapes where attention goes, how families coordinate, and how decisions get made. A tool that takes hours and agency away can make a life worse even while it is technically useful.
Does Guardian measure a person's flourishing?
No. Guardian does not score people. Flourishing is a design direction for our work, not a rating we apply to anyone.

Technology should serve a life, not consume one.

That is the standard Guardian Enterprise is trying to build to, and the one we would like to be judged by.
